Therapeutic

I, unfortunately, had no one on my side helping me with this. I continued to go to my medical appointments, and I let my medical providers know that I was going to be coming off medications as my symptoms reduced. But no one supported my low carb journey. I was on my own. Thank goodness for the low carb community that I connected with in order to get that external support.

Integration

I did a body fat tape test before I started. My body fat was 38%. I did not do any other lab tests. I began taking my blood sugar and ketones and monitored those daily for about a year. I began taking MCT every day, and I still to this day take it daily. I experimented with exogenous ketones, but I didn't feel like they made a difference for me.

Nutritional

I followed 70/20/10 macros. I was very strict for about 2 years. I became more flexible and began to add back more carbs and higher protein after that. Most days I did 16:8, but I would do a full fast day once a week. I also did OMAD on and off for a while. I allowed for a treat at special occasions, but it was very limited to one special thing I would want to try.

Ketosis

I aimed for 1.0 mmol/L. I tested twice a day for about a year.

Sleep

Sleep was a big problem for me. I did all the things. I had a regular bed and wake time every day. I stopped looking at screens in the bedroom. I always got outside in the morning to get sunlight. I started meditating every night to fall asleep to. I invested in a very good pillow and breathable, cool sheets since I tend to sleep hot. I went from struggling with insomnia to being a good sleeper!

M

Move

I have always exercised so this wasn't a problem for me. I work out every day without fail, even if it's just getting 10,000 steps in.

A

Avoid

I greatly reduced my use of alcohol and had a rule to only have a drink on the weekends. I also limit myself to just one drink one day a week if I have anything at all. I never had a problem with boundaries socially. It's easy for me to say no to things. I am fortunate that I never had any addictive tendencies with food or substances. When people offer me things I don't eat or drink, I just say, "No, thank you."

Rebuild

Educating myself with books, podcasts, and attending low-carb conferences was very helpful. I tapped into the knowledge and community that helped support my journey.

Track

I was not pre-diabetic or anything. The only thing I ended up doing was getting a DEXA scan that showed my body fat had been reduced by 50%, which was amazing! My blood sugars leveled off, and I consider myself cured of hypoglycemia. I would test with a blood sugar and ketone monitor 2 times a day during the first year I was doing keto. All of my current blood work 10 years later is perfect!
